Access to Information

There are 2 Acts that relate to information in South Africa:
  • Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA): The Protection of Personal Information Act, 2000 is South Africa’s data protection law. It has been put in place to ensure everyone’s right to privacy as protected by the Constitution (section 14).
  • Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA): The Promotion of Access to Information Act No. 2, 2000 is a freedom of information law in South Africa. It gives the constitutional right of access to any information held by the State and any information held by private bodies that is required for the exercise and protection of any rights.
